Chief Sealth Trail

10.4 miles - rolling hills

This route starts at the Space Needle and heads towards Beacon Hill picking up the Chief Sealth Trail head just south of Jefferson Park.  The main mantra here is 'look left'.  Since this trail winds southeast, usually when the trail stops it picks back up again slightly to the left of where you're standing, (while heading south).

Route highlights and tricky spots:

Jackson Street through the International District is slow 0.8 mile hill with a 3.6% grade, so shift into a lower gear and allow your speed to drop a bit especially since it's early in the run.

The Beacon Ave hill starts at mile 4 and has an 8.2% grade for about 1/3 of a mile.  It's shorter but steeper, and if you aren't expecting it, you may end up walking the hill.  That's ok!

To find the Chief Sealth trail head, run down 15th Ave S. and take a right on S. Angeline St.  The trail head will take off to the right

After about ½ mile the trail comes to Beacon Street where it continues directly across the street.  Be careful not go right here as this will put you onto the Beacon Ave Trail, which is also fun but isn’t the Chief Sealth Trail.

After S. Orcas St. you will come to S. Juneau St. where you will need to take a brief left to pick up the trail again, heading to the right.

The trail stops at 30th Ave S. briefly.  Take a right and go down 30th Ave S. across S. Graham St. and the road will turn back into the trail.

The next break in the trail is tricky.  Other trail maps will have you take main roads around to S. Kenyon St to pick the trail up again, which works… but I like to stay on the trail as much as possible.  There are two ways to pick up the trail sooner.  Once you reach S. Myrtle Pl. you can do two things.

 1.  Go right and take a left onto 35th Ave S.  The maps show that this street does not go through but there is a small dirt trail through the trees to the street on the other side.  From there you can go left on S. Webster St and meet up with the trail again on the right side of the street.

Or 2.  Go left and turn immediately right onto S Holly Park Dr.  Where a small footpath leads up a steep hill where the paved trail picks up again at the top.

From there, the trail runs by the Thistle P-Patch and then comes to Martin Luther King Jr Way S. where the Link light rail line runs.  Cross the tracks at S. Trenton St. and take the trail straight into the park where it curves right and continues straight through S. Henderson St.

After ½ mile, the trail appears to dead-end at Marcus Ave S.  Take a left, and go down the hill to pick the trail up again at the corner of S. Roxbury St. and 48th Ave S.

The trail comes to a terminus at S. Gazelle St. and 51st Ave S.  From here it is great to head over to Rainier Ave S. to explore the Kubota Garden, have a picnic or meet up with friends!
